1934 SS City of Montgomery ship fire New York City
The SS City of Montgomery, from Savannah, GA arrived March 6th, 1934 with burning cargo in her hold. The cargo contained turpintine, rosin, lumber, hides and cotton. Firefighters and two fireboats battled the fire for twenty four hours.
Twenty nine passengers were able to disembark the ship. The ship listed sharply to port.
The Fireboat William J. Gaynor is tied to the ship to fight the fire.
