• The original city of Bridgeport, CT railroad station was built in 1905 and destroyed by fire in 1979.
BRIDGEPORT, Conn., March 20 — A two‐alarm fire, apparently set by arsonists early this morning, destroyed a. vacant 75‐year‐old railroad station that city officials had hoped to renovate as the catalyst for the revitalization of downtown Bridgeport, the state's largest city.

Firefighters kept the blaze from spreading to the adjacent tracks that run on wooden‐ timbers between the plank decks of the elevated station. After the smoke had cleared and the fire hoses had been removed from the tracks, trains of Conrail's New Haven division crept through the station during the morning Irush hour.

The fire quickly consumed the interior of the huge yellow‐brick building, a landmark with Romanesque Revival architecture, and forced demolition of the rest.

The blaze was reported at 1 A.M. and burned out of control for more than five hours. Officials said they believed arson was the cause. One fireman was slightly injured.

At the time of the negotiations were under way between a private developer and a consortium of banks to sell the building for $500,000 as part of a project called “Ferryboat Junction.”

Plans called for filling the station with specialty shops and installing a restaurant in an old Staten Island ferryboat, the Miss New York, now tied up nearby in the Pequonnock River. The proposal also included an amusement park to be built on a city‐owned beach across Bridgeport Harbor and connected to the railroad station‐restaurant complex by a ferry.
