New Haven 3rd Alarm 306 Howard Ave.
03/03/12 New Haven, CT -Firefighters battled a large fire this morning in the city's Hill section. The fire was reported as an explosion with fire shortly before eight a.m. at 307 Howard Avenue. First due companies found a two story house leveled and on fire as well as the exposures on both sides well involved in fire. A second alarm was transmitted followed shorty after with a third alarm.
Firefighters went to work right away protecting the exposures as well as performing interior attacks on each house. They were unsure of whether or not people were trapped in the rubble and the houses. The occupants of all the houses were able to make it out prior to the fire departments arrival.
Firefighters worked for an hour to bring the fires under control. Neighbors reported that the fire department had been on scene earlier in the night for an electrical issue in the area. The United Illuminating Company had also been on scene and had just turned the power back on prior to the explosion. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Several firefighters were injured, it is reported they had non life threatening injuries.
