Bridgeport former Skydels Department Store
Another major fire in the city of Bridgeport was the old Skydels department store on East Main St. in the city's east side.
12/02/93 Bridgeport, CT- Engine Co.10 was dispatched on a still alarm for a rubbish fire in a vacant lot. After extinguishing the fire they noticed smoke coming from the rear of the former Skydels Department store across the street. A dumpster fire next to a dwelling extended into it. The dwelling was also against the department store. It was a windy an cold December night causing the fire to rapidly extend throughout both structures. The box was transmitted around three thirty in the morning. Recall was placed at eight thirty a.m. The extreme cold and wind hampered firefighting efforts.
The fire was determined to be arson. It was thought someone set the rubbish fires in the area. The fire was a third alarm equivalent by today's run cards. Seven engines, four trucks and the squad operated with master streams to bring the fire under control.
